Gen Z and the Entrepreneurial Mindset – Opportunities & Obstacles ft. Jason Lee

This past summer, Denzity hosted its largest ever Internship Program, cultivating and witnessing the growth of our new members as they scaled in confidence and ability faster than sapling taking root. This amazing experience was made possible due to our guest on this episode of Denzity Lens – Jason Lee.

In our second episode with him, we discuss specifically the world of entrepreneurship with the intention to bring out some important advise which could be useful not just for Gen Z, but any individual that wishes to distinguish themselves from their peers. Jason tells us that an entrepreneurial mindset is about knowing “how to turn ideas into reality.” The distinct lies in being able to execute your ideas.

Jason then goes on to shed light on the struggles he faced as an entrepreneur and how he had to start with almost nothing, how he built up his career and the value he has found in the power of mentorship and learning from others. He recalls the invaluable insights his father imparted upon him, and the things he has learned from professors and batch mates in his MBA. They too have struggled and had the wisdom to give him a clearer idea of how he could embark on his own path!

Finally, Jason touches upon the importance of the Greater Bay Area and highlights how Hong Kong and its industries can capitalise on its pre-existing history and reputation, as well as compete with all the other great talent along the Pearl River Delta. He also stresses the importance of flexibility and humility, especially when it comes to facing adversity (case in point being the downturn following COVID-19).

About the Guest :

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Jason Lee studied at Diocesan Boys’ School before attending boarding school at St Johnsbury Academy in the United States. He graduated with a BA in International Relations at George Washington University and later earned a TESOL certificate at Trinity College London. After moving back to Hong Kong, he became an Overseas Admissions Counselor specializing in interview and application essay training. It wasn’t until he saw the positive character changes and excellent results of his students that he realized his calling in education, and founded Lee Educational Consulting (LEC).

LEC is an English tutoring and admissions counseling center whose mission is to help students achieve their full potential and prepare them for their entrance in schools, universities and beyond. Jason founded LEC based on the idea that all students deserve a chance to be equipped with the necessary tools to succeed on their own. His objective is to inculcate learning habits and skills that would help them deal with similar problems by themselves. LEC offers International School, Boarding School and University Admissions Counseling, as well as programs targetting SAT/ACT test preparation and premium English tutoring on a wide range of levels.

Gen Z and Preparing for the Future // Z ft. Jason Lee

This past summer, Denzity hosted its largest ever Internship Program, cultivating and witnessing the growth of our new members as they scaled in confidence and ability faster than sapling taking root. This amazing experience was made possible due to our guest on this episode of Denzity Lens – Jason Lee.

Jason has been working in the education sector for quite a while now, and has made it his life mission to help students actualise their academic passions and become more refined individuals. He mainly talks to us about what today’s youth is like, how much potential they have and, more importantly, how they can be nurtured to figure out their future paths.

Jason first and foremost sympathizes with parents because their dreams and aspirations are always for their child to succeed. However, he believes that not every youth has the same needs or difficulties. Thus, each might require unique (sometimes out of the box) educational solutions. He also firmly believes in good mentorship that can steer a student towards exploring the right experiences to figure out their path. Jason believes in the ability of generation z students, and is amazed by their mental alacrity and advanced understanding of complex subjects. He encourages them to seek out real-life experiences and to slow down so that they can figure out what they truly want. While from the outside, it may seem that success is merely a short jump away, it takes many different types of trials and errors before one has amassed enough knowledge and understanding to be able to achieve one’s ambitions.

Watch the entire episode above to hear Jason’s thoughts and examples in a more in-depth manner!

Millennials Investing – A Seed To Harvest ft. Larry Hung

At this point, mentioning anything related to the insanity of Hong Kong’s housing market is akin to beating a dead horse. Prices have been rising, and they’re projected to keep rising, while household income stagnates. Further, as technology convolutes the financial landscape, emerging millennials and gen z investors find themselves in truly turbulent waters.

But according to local investment Guru, Larry Hung, all is not lost. In his second Lens episode with us, he draws from his past childhood and his future fatherhood to give us some advice on how to approach property investment.

First and foremost, Larry believes in introducing basic economics skills and the concept of money to children and teenagers from an early age. His Fukien heritage meant that his father and uncle were eager to instil in him the interest to invest. In his journey since, Larry has come to put a lot of stock in diversity – specifically diversity in experience. He compares the workspace to basketball, where each member of his team excels at a different position on the court. And as you slowly transition into a professional, it’s important to understand that the act of investing becomes almost athletic. Day in and day out, you’re constantly honing your edge and keeping up with the market even if you won a medal last season. It’s not just your own capital at risk now – you’re carrying the burden of many a stakeholders’ trust.

As the episode goes on, Larry sheds light on his future as a father, and how he plans to teach his child about investing. He also postulates on some changes he wishes to see in the industry and what he thinks about the rise of investment apps and other specialised technologies. Tune in above to catch his wisdom right from his mouth!

▶ About the Guest

Larry Hung, is the Co-CIO of Centaline Wealth Management. He runs a hedge fund and a bunch of discretionary accounts which focus on three main sectors – TMT, discretionary consumption and healthcare. He is value and growth oriented, and a true long-term focus investor. Larry started the investment brand Oceanic with his partner Michael Kan in mid 2017. The company formed a Joint-Venture like structure with Centaline in late 2019. Recently, he launched a global mandate hedge fund that aims to run a concentrated portfolio with no more than 15 holdings, with a target to achieve “home run” returns for investors. Larry and his team are now accepting inflows and expect the fund to trade in mid-Oct.

Millennials Need To Start Taking Real Estate Seriously ft.Raymond Ho, Eugenia Leung

We’re back at it again with our second Insights episode with Raymond and Eugenia! Instead of focusing on the overall scene in Toronto, we double down on investment tactics for millennials.

The effects of the pandemic have been felt world-wide. In some cases, individuals and businesses alike have suffered massive setbacks, but in many others, opportunities have sprung forth. How has the real estate industry fared? In Canada, the younger generation has been spurred by lowered interest rates, and high savings, to purchase housing. 25% of millenials flocked to purchase new property in the last year alone! Even now, a housing poll conducted by The Bank of Nova Scotia shows that 40% of millennials are pelting towards home ownership (while interest rates last). But Raymond and Eugenia preach caution. In their extensive career, they have come to realise the value of portfolio planning. They are huge proponents of wealth accrual through smart property purchases spread out through many years, instead of spending all your cash in one big buy. Raymond touches on the importance of “positioning” and how one should think of purchasing property as a 30 or 40 year long game. Eugenia gives a practical demonstration of their approach through a client case, and breaks down how one could make smart investments by looking into different types of homes and locations. So sit back, relax and let’s catch some industry gems together. Listen closely for some very clever tips and suggestions if you’re interested in growing your own wealth through investment and real estate!
